PREPARING FOR MOVING DAY

When Should You Start Preparing for Your Move?

A little preparation before moving day can save time, reduce stress, and help your movers work more efficiently. For most moves, we recommend starting the packing and preparation process at least 2–3 weeks before moving day. 2–3 Weeks Before Your Move

  • Start packing items you don’t use every day, including decorations, books, seasonal clothing, and storage items.
  • Sort through belongings and donate, sell, or dispose of anything you don’t want to move.
  • Gather moving boxes, packing paper, tape, mattress bags, and other supplies you’ll need.
  • Begin packing one room at a time so boxes stay organized.
  • Clearly label each box with its contents and the room where it belongs.
  • Keep important documents, medications, valuables, chargers, and other essentials separate from packed belongings.

A Few Days Before Moving Day

  • Finish packing everything that won’t be needed before the move.
  • Make sure boxes are completely closed, taped, and clearly labeled.
  • Empty and prepare furniture that needs to be moved.
  • Disconnect electronics and organize cords, remotes, and accessories.
  • Set aside anything you’ll personally transport rather than placing it on the moving truck.
  • Confirm access, parking, elevators, gates, or other details that could affect moving day.

If you’d rather leave some—or all—of the packing to us, Helping Hands offers professional packing and unpacking services throughout Utah.

PACKING & LABELING TIPS

Pack Smarter and Make Moving Day Easier

How you pack your belongings can make a big difference on moving day. Properly packed and clearly labeled boxes help protect your belongings and make loading, unloading, and getting settled into your new home much easier.

Use these simple packing tips as you prepare:

  • Don’t Overload Boxes — Keep boxes at a manageable weight. Use smaller boxes for heavier items such as books and larger boxes for lighter belongings.
  • Label Every Box — Clearly mark the room where each box belongs and briefly describe what’s inside.
  • Mark Fragile Items — Label boxes containing glassware, dishes, electronics, artwork, or other delicate belongings as FRAGILE.
  • Protect Empty Space — Use packing paper or other appropriate packing material to prevent items from shifting inside boxes.
  • Pack Similar Items Together — Keeping items from the same room together makes unpacking much easier.
  • Secure Every Box — Fold and tape the bottom and top of each box securely rather than simply folding the flaps together.
  • Keep Hardware Organized — Place screws, bolts, brackets, and other furniture hardware in labeled bags so they’re easy to find when it’s time to reassemble.
  • Create an Essentials Box — Keep toiletries, medications, chargers, basic tools, important documents, a change of clothes, and anything you’ll need immediately at your new home separate.

Let the Movers Know What Needs Special Attention

When our crew arrives, point out fragile, valuable, unusually heavy, or specialty items that may require additional care or planning. A few minutes of communication at the beginning of your move can make the entire process run more smoothly.

PROTECTING FURNITURE & ELECTRONICS

Protect Your Furniture, TVs & Electronics

Furniture and electronics often require more protection than standard boxed items. Taking a few extra steps before moving day can help prevent scratches, shifting, and unnecessary damage during loading and transportation.

Before your movers arrive:

  • Empty Furniture When Possible — Remove loose items from dressers, desks, cabinets, and other furniture before they’re moved.
  • Protect Furniture Surfaces — Moving blankets and stretch wrap can help protect furniture from scratches, scuffs, and contact with other items.
  • Secure Doors & Drawers — Make sure cabinet doors, drawers, and other moving parts are properly secured before transportation.
  • Prepare TVs Carefully — If you have the original TV box, use it. Otherwise, consider a properly sized TV or specialty moving box with appropriate protection.
  • Disconnect Electronics — Unplug televisions, computers, gaming systems, and other electronics before the movers arrive.
  • Label Cords & Accessories — Keep cords, remotes, mounting hardware, and accessories together and clearly labeled.
  • Take Photos Before Disconnecting — A quick photo of the back of your television, computer, or entertainment system can make reconnecting everything much easier.
  • Tell Your Movers About Specialty Items — Pianos, safes, oversized furniture, antiques, artwork, and other unusual items should be discussed before moving day so the proper equipment and planning can be arranged.

Have Something That Requires Special Handling?

Helping Hands Moving and Maids has been moving Utah families and businesses since 2006. Let us know about unusually heavy, oversized, fragile, or specialty items when scheduling your move so we can plan accordingly.

GETTING READY FOR YOUR MOVERS

Be Ready When Your Moving Crew Arrives

A little preparation before your movers arrive can help your move start on time and keep the entire day running efficiently. The more prepared your home or business is, the more time your movers can spend doing what you hired them to do—moving.

Before your moving crew arrives:

  • Finish Packing — Unless you’ve scheduled packing services, have boxes packed, sealed, and labeled before the crew arrives.
  • Create Clear Walkways — Keep hallways, stairs, doorways, and pathways free of clutter so movers can safely carry furniture and boxes.
  • Reserve Parking — Make sure there is adequate space for the moving truck as close to the entrance as possible.
  • Arrange Building Access — If you’re moving into or out of an apartment, condo, or commercial building, reserve elevators and confirm loading-area requirements ahead of time.
  • Keep Kids & Pets Safe — Arrange a safe area away from doors, walkways, and the moving truck while loading and unloading are taking place.
  • Identify Items That Aren’t Moving — Clearly separate belongings that are staying behind or that you’ll be transporting yourself.
  • Point Out Specialty Items — Show the crew any fragile, oversized, unusually heavy, or high-priority items before loading begins.
  • Keep Important Items With You — Medications, identification, important documents, keys, wallets, and other personal essentials should travel with you rather than on the moving truck.

MOVING DAY ESSENTIALS

Keep These Items With You on Moving Day

Some belongings are better kept with you instead of being packed onto the moving truck. Preparing a small moving-day essentials bag or boxcan make your first night in your new home much easier.
Consider keeping these items with you:

  • Identification & Important Documents — Driver’s licenses, passports, closing documents, leases, insurance information, and other important paperwork.
  • Medications — Keep prescription medications and other necessary medical items readily accessible.
  • Phones & Chargers — Keep chargers, power banks, and important electronics where you can easily reach them.
  • Keys & Access Information — Keep keys, garage remotes, gate codes, and building-access information together.
  • Basic Toiletries — Toothbrushes, soap, towels, toilet paper, and anything you’ll want immediately after arriving.
  • Change of Clothes — Pack clothing for your first night and the following morning.
  • Basic Tools — A screwdriver, utility knife, scissors, tape, and a few basic tools can be useful while getting settled.
  • Snacks & Water — Moving days can be long. Keep drinks and easy snacks available for yourself and your family.
  • Kids & Pet Essentials — Keep food, medications, favorite toys, leashes, carriers, and other necessities readily available.
  • Valuable or Irreplaceable Items — Jewelry, cash, personal records, photographs, and sentimental items are generally best kept with you.

One Last Check Before You Leave
Before leaving your old home, walk through every room, closet, cabinet, garage, basement, attic, and outdoor area. Check that nothing has been left behind and make sure you have everything you’ll need to access your new home.

Moving Supplies & Packing FAQs

What moving supplies do I need for a typical move?

Most moves require sturdy moving boxes in several sizes, packing paper, packing tape, mattress bags, stretch wrap, moving blankets, and specialty boxes for items such as televisions, mirrors, and artwork. The exact supplies you need will depend on the size of your move and what you’re moving.

How far in advance should I start packing?

For most moves, starting about 2–3 weeks before moving day gives you enough time to pack gradually and stay organized. Begin with belongings you don’t use every day and save everyday essentials for last.

How should I prepare furniture before moving day?
